As you prepare your children for ‘summer camps’ and then for ‘back to school’ in the fall, allow me to provide you with some essential lice prevention tips.

Head lice are not going away. It is a year-round reoccurring problem, the elimination of which often brings parents to their knees as they struggle week after week to get rid of it.

In my years of experience in the lice removal industry, I have made some very important observations, most especially this ONE:

THE BIGGEST MISTAKE FAMILIES MAKE WHEN IT COMES TO HEAD LICE IS ‘LOOKING’ THROUGH THE HAIR WITH THEIR FINGERS.

Head lice starts with ONE bug only. That ONE fertilized female louse (singular for lice) gets into a child’s hair from a head to head encounter and begins its cycle of life within 24 hours.

  • She can lay 3 to 10 eggs per day.

  • 7 to 10 days later those eggs hatch (that causes the itching as the babies start to feed)

  • In another 7 to 10 days the babies are now adults, mating and laying their own eggs!

Even if families are familiar with lice/nits and what they look like, it’s impossible to find lice in the very early stages by sifting through hair because:

  • Lice move very fast in hair, so it’s hard to spot that one female.

  • Nits are very small and laid very close to the scalp, about a ¼” from the scalp.

  • Newly hatched lice (nymphs) are very well camouflaged and again, way too small to see.

  • Some parents have no idea what they are looking for.

By the time lice have revealed themselves parents have a lice infestation on their hands.

Although kids will itch and complain for weeks, families, sifting through their heads will assume, ‘if you can’t see lice, it’s not there’.

But, of course, there is a HUGE advantage of finding lice at the very beginning of its cycle because it can be eliminated easily and quickly within minutes.

How do you spot lice at the very beginning of its cycle and before everyone else contracts it?

  • Run a lice comb quickly through their hair. It’s the fastest and surest way to find presence of lice and/or nits.

  • Invest in a lice comb.

  • Lean how to use a lice comb to diagnose lice or nits in seconds and STOP checking through the hair. I have a NEW patented comb that takes the 'GUESSING' out of 'do they, don't they' have lice. It's called the 'Quick Check Lice Comb' that takes 60 seconds or less to know for sure.

  • Anytime your child has been exposed to lice, run the lice comb through their hair. You can get that female louse before she starts laying eggs, usually within 24 hours.

  • Consider making lice combing part of an ongoing hygiene routine. Keep vigilant! 60 seconds can save you hours of stress, time and money
